In rural areas the industry creates many economic, environmental and social benefits and a large number of people in rural areas are directly employed in agricultural activities.

Bluetongue vaccination programme

Charollais sheepA compulsory bluetongue vaccination programme to protect Scotland's livestock from the disease is underway.

By April 30, 2009 all 10 million of the country's cattle and sheep must be vaccinated.

As well as a series of roadshows, a telephone helpline - 0845 155 3366 - has been set up to advise farmers.
